Hiya all, just a comment on Jeftinija's article. First off, it's well written and organized smoothly, Kudos. It's true, Fan Art boosts hits like nothing else! BUT - The way I see it, fan art shouldn't be about getting yourself seen. It should be about showing love for others in the same field. I'm a middle ground comic with around 250 hits per day. Nowhere NEAR the thousands that some authors get, but I'm securely out of the double-digits. I've sent stuff to comics above and beyond my status, but also to people just starting out who I really liked. It becomes kind of shallow if you pick your fanart based on who's likely to get you the most hits. And heck, it's the people with low hit counts who need the encouragement... and they're more appreciative!

Totally in agreement with you. If it isn't for the 'fan' element, then it's just a cheap shot at slurping some readers off the top of someone else's cappuchino, eh? That's why your particular comic is one of only four pieces of fan art I've done.

I agree. But I think that both a desire to get seen and a wish to show another artist how much you care can factor in at the same time. I don't draw fanart for comics I don't like, no matter how popular they are. Besides, REALLY popular comics don't always put your art in a place where you'll get links from them.

Hm. Reasons for drawing Fanart can be various. I drew fanart for comics that I'm not fan of, because I was intrigued with characters , designs, situations, so I wanted to play with them a bit myself. Other odd reason why I drew fanart was, because I knew it would make receiver happy. I've also seen people draw fanart to someone because he complained "awww, nobody draws fanart for me". It turns out that I drew fanart to some comics that became popular only later. Good for me.
